About the author

Bitz of Art.
In 1999 the decision was made that I wanted to spend my days with my wife and kids rather than going to work behind the parts counter. November of that same year I started Bitz of Art Productions. After seven years of studying and doing work just for the experience I had found a client who was able to provide me with the workload I needed to keep a roof over our heads. In January 2006 I quit my dead end job and began my career as a full-time freelance Flash developer.

What exactly is a Freelance Lifestyle?

I feel confident enough that I can tell you…since that’s the lifestyle I live. But be forewarned, it considerably varies according to the individual. First and foremost…you must take care of your clients! Without them you wouldn’t be where you are today (or tomorrow if you’re still working as a full-time freelancer).
Without your clients you would be trying to find a way to keep your laptop dry on those rainy nights. You might happen upon that same individual around the corner of your favorite coffee shop realizing that they have located the perfect combination of a reliable, free wifi connection and a power source which allows them to get online and work on a project which they manage to acquire from someone they were following on Twitter.
Sound a bit far fetched? Not at all my friends…as I have mentally just placed myself in that exact position. With my trusty laptop, wifi and a power source, since batteries give out so quickly, I could literally run my business from a shopping cart, library or a coffee shop.
Taking myself on that little trip helps me realize that I truly live like a king.

If what I just said makes sense to you then we’re on the right track.

Living the lifestyle of a freelancer doesn’t necessarily mean you have to run your business from a shopping cart but the determination and drive behind that mentality is a requirement.
Historically freelancers has been called the medieval knights who fought on their own, free to chose (or not) a side.
be warned    Let’s work through this concept of “Freelance” by breaking the word down into its two most basic components and defining each of them:
Free: able to act at will
Lance: move quickly, as if by cutting one’s way
Now let’s put those two together in a way that can define a Freelancer:
Someone who is able to act at will in order to create their own way.
Does it sound appealing for you?

As a freelancer you are able to act at will in order to create your own way.

No wonder the this sounds so grand! As a freelancer I have the ability to act at will in order to create my own way. In life that makes us all Freelancers!!
The question behind this is…What is my own way?!?
That’s up to you and based on what you are ready for.

My vision of freelancing was based on spending more time with my family, yet the funny thing is I work more now than ever! Why is that? I didn’t strategically plan ahead allowing for the main purpose to take the lead.
Sure, now I make more than double the average yearly income of most Americans but what’s the point? Especially when Uncle Sam takes nearly a third of it? He doesn’t stay up till 3am to meet those deadlines. But when he wakes up after a good night sleep that chunk of my income is on his register. ~ ooppss! I guess that’s still on topic…?

My point is to really consider what it is you are after as a freelancer. Do you want to make lots of money or would you rather true freedom? Do you want to acquire $6,000 a month in expenses or would you rather work 15 hours a week? Do you want to be able to chose who to work for and to pick the project you'd be really effective at instead of losing tons of time working on stuff that bores you or you are just not best at? Sleeping open eyed in some office or choosing when to work hard and when to take a rest?
The choice is yours…as you are free to create your own way.

***I would like to thank my son for motivating me to write this article. As we were spending some time together he asked what I was going to do when he went to bed. I said “You know me…I’m going to work on something”. He asked “What are you going to work on”? I said “I’m not sure yet…I have so many things to do I just need to pick one”. His response…”Why don’t you work on something you want to work on?” And so this is what I came up with…thanks to the wisdom of a 7yr old.

I hope you find it useful.
